Earlier today, Roseanne Barr, known as Roseanne Conner from the hit TV show "Roseanne," and the new ABC sitcom reboot of the same name, was fired from the show (and thus the show will be canceled), and her talent agency, after racist remarks she made on Twitter.

QUOTE (Deadline)
Line
“We are all greatly distressed by the disgraceful and unacceptable tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning,” the agency’s leadership said in an internal memo to company employees. “What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency.  Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her.  Effective immediately, Roseanne Barr is no longer a client.”

Barr signed with ICM Partners last summer, ahead of the premiere of the Roseanne revival on ABC.

The agency’s decision to drop Barr followed a morning of racist tweets in which Barr described Valerie Jarrett, a former key adviser to President Obama, as an offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.” She followed the tweet with an apology after a social media firestorm of criticism, saying it was a “joke” and that she was leaving Twitter. The announcement by ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey that the network was canceling the revival series soon followed. Disney CEO Bob Iger weighed in shortly afterward, supporting the cancellation decision, tweeting “There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.”

I have this here and not in the Holodeck because I'm curious as to what people think about this trend. Roseanne certainly isn't the first, though she has created a strong backlash I haven't seen in a while. Still, Donald Trump, the current President of the United States, engages in hateful tweeting almost every day, and has sparked numerous backlashes as a result. Other well known personalities have done the same.

What is it that brings people to act this way on Twitter and other social media? Is this modern discourse? Have we truly limited our contrasting viewpoints to a couple of hundred characters on a social media app?

More so, why the increasing racism, bigotry, and homophobia, and why through outlets like these?

That's true, they do. I guess for some it's so much easier to blast people when you've got an anonymous shield to hide behind. Of course, with her it's all out in the open. I guess the internet makes some people feel untouchable when they make terrible comments.

The current POTUS gets away with it. If he does it, it must be okay.

I can tell. //files.jcink.net/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Still, you're right in that his behavior does seem to implicitly allow for people to behave like spoiled, ignorant children.

Which puts he and I at different ends of the spectrum in that regard. It's incredible to me how Obama was excoriated for the tiniest infractions, but Trump out and out lies, and is given a pass. It's the age of disinformation, and truth and fact are falling back.

Is he the only World leader that takes to Twitter? I watch a completely different News Source. It’s mostly Japanese and Asia news. I hear about that side of the World. And I don’t hear much about other World Leaders taking to a Twitter as much as he does.

I think he's the only one that pushes official policy through Twitter. I've seen heads of state, or at least people who represent heads of state, use Twitter for things, but Trump's the only one I know that uses it as an official branch of the U.S. government's communications department.

I realize this thread is about tweeting and how it can get the tweeter into trouble for something he or she tweeted 5 years ago or something along those lines but since the POTUS was brought into to it and rightfully so I figured I'd throw this here.

Donald Trump is a salesman who has always been infatuated by seeing his family name at the head of the line when it comes to virtually anything. Whether it is on the front of a building, hotel, aircraft or anything else it doesn't matter why it is there, just that it is there. By tweeting virtually anything every morning, he guarantees he will be the story that day. The more outrageous he tweets (or speaks) the better for him.

Most of what he tweets plays directly into the hands of those who support him AND those who oppose him but for different reasons.

Part of me says he's damaging the brand, but then I look at how so many people still smile and wave when he's near, and I wonder if nothing short of the apocalypse could damage his brand.

For the sake of openness, I would like to add I'm not a fan of capitalism, and I despise commercialism in its most exploitative form, like snake oil salesmen at their worst, so Trump kind of embodies that "greasiness" if you get what I mean.

Although I am not a fan of a lot of things Trump does. I have seen him do some very kind and Human Being like things as well. I mean do we really want to see him fail? It only hurts us. I mean he is after all a person with a family, I have heard people say they wish harm on him and that baffles me. Yeah he is an egomaniac and he does some really dumb shit, but dont we all?? https://files.jcink.net/uploads/starscapebbs/Smilies/whome.gif

Unfortunately for us, though, doing moronic things as President puts us all at risk. He’s petty, vindictive, cruel, possesses an incuriosity that is matched only by his VP, and seems to strongly dislike Muslims, immigrants, and women. I don’t want him failing in a way that hurts people, but I do want his policies to fail.

Well, I'm not sure it's hate when it comes to being against Trump, it's more frustration with his personality, and the actions & policies that result from it.
