Well here we go for the last ½ ...or is the last 1/3 of the season?
The worst news all the way around had to be losing Ramos until at least the trading deadline. Maybe there's a chance of getting a waiver deal done, but unless he can convince a team that he's 100% healed that might be tough.
Maybe a longshot, but what if the Rays decide that even an injury prone Ramos is a better option than another backup who may or may not be any better than Sucre. Maybe Ramos decides to trade a one or two year contract at below market (again) rather than risk being in free agent limbo the way so many guys who valued themselves more highly than the teams did were.
In the meantime, Sucre gets most of the action, which isn't all that bad, but his defense is going to make up for the run creation we lose with Ramos out.
Meanwhile, Adam Moore will become the backup. He was hitting .197 at Durham in part-time duty. Hardly a ringing endorsement for Nick Ciuffo.
So with Machado going to the Dodgers for a truckload of prospects, does that open up the market for Hech? So far, it doesn't sound like it.
I'm hoping Adames is doing okay at Durham. I'm sure the RFO thought Hech would be long gone by now, but if Willie can work on a few things he might be a big winner.
Archer is making noises that sound like he's willing to go quietly if the Rays want to deal him. He's trying hard to do and say the right things, but sometimes the best thing to say is...nothing....
So who's the next empty locker? Hech, Eovaldi, Archer....someone else? Step right up and place your bets!
Well the latest round of media bashing is in full swing. An anonymous survey of MLB players rates the Tampa Bay and Miami fans as the worst. Of course, those are the fewest at every game. My comeback is “how can you tell?” Not much of a comeback is it?
A Chicago columnist rated the Trop the worst stadium, noting that while downtown St. Petersburg is nice, the stadium is a mile away from them (I think that's an exaggeration) and who wants to watch a game in that dump? (Or words to that effect). My suggestion is that he go to an afternoon Florida State League game in Clearwater and get back to me.
I recognize the Trop's shortcomings, but when it comes to watching a game in comfort outdoors in Florida in summer doesn't work.
Commisisoner Manfred gave his vote of confidence that the Raybor City stadium will get built. Thanks Commish, now where's the check?
It looks like C.J. Cron is on his way to the best breakout season since Brad Miller hit 30 dingers. I hope Cron's season is less of a fluke than Miller's was.
It was nice to see Kevin Cash at the All-Star game. It's interesting that two of his “new school” colleagues in Brian Price and Mike Matheney have bitten the dust while others are doing well. I really think he's doing a great job. Everyone's got pretty much the same information these days, but I think he's really doing a good job of mixing the data with his own baseball knowledge. He isn't right every time, but I like his batting average. (See what I did there?)
It should be interesting to see how Andy Freed and Dave Wills do in Dewayne Staat's place this weekend. I know they'll do a good job, but it might be a good chance to show off two guys that I think don't get nearly enough credit.
OT, I thought the Florida State SB Nation page had an awesome cheap shot when they pointed out that the Gator's “Decommitted” recruiting class was higher rated than their commitments. Yeah, they'll settle it on the field, but that was still a good one.
If you haven't seen it yet, I posted a picture of the Boise State Blue Turf in the “Random Images” thread.
I'm happy to report that just over two months post-surgery I'm down 48 pounds. About halfway to the ultimate goal! Thank you all for your support!
